How to Install a QSFP28 Transceiver

In recent years, QSFP28 transceivers have been highly favored by many Ethernet users. The modules are hot-swappable input/output (I/O) device that connect the system’s module port electrical circuity with either a copper or a fiber-optic network. Transceiver installation attaches great importance to the whole Ethernet connectivity. This article provides the installation tips of 100 Gigabit QSFP28 optical transceivers.

Information About QSFP28 Transceiver

100 Gigabit (QSFP28) transceiver module is a hot-swappable, parallel fiber-optical module. The interconnect offers four channels of high-speed differential signals with data rates ranging from 25 Gbps up to potentially 40 Gbps, and will meet 100 Gbps Ethernet (4×25 Gbps) and 100 Gbps 4X InfiniBand Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) requirements. These channels can terminate in another 40G QSFP+ transceiver. The QSFP+ transceiver connects the electrical circuity of the system with an optical external network.

The following figure shows the 100G QSFP28 SR4 transceiver. The transceiver is used primarily in short reach applications in switches, routers and data center equipment where it provides higher density than SFP+ modules.

Required Tools and Equipment

To install the 100G QSFP28 transceiver, you need the following tools :

    • Wrist strap or other personal grounding device to prevent ESD occurrences.
    • Antistatic mat or Antistatic foam to set the transceiver on.
    • Fiber-optic end-face cleaning tools and inspection equipment.
Installing 100G QSFP28 Transceiver

The QSFP28 transceiver can have either a bail-clasp latch or a pull-tab latch. Installation procedures for both types of latches are provided.

Caution: The QSFP28 transceiver is a static-sensitive device. Always use an ESD wrist strap or similar individual grounding device when handling QSFP28 transceivers or coming into contact with system modules.

Installation Steps:

Step1: Attach an ESD wrist strap to yourself and a properly grounded point on the chassis or the rack.

Step2: Remove the QSFP28 transceiver from its protective packaging.

Step3: Check the label on the QSFP28 transceiver body to verify that you have the correct model for your network.

Step 4: For QSFP28 transceiver, remove the optical bore dust plug and set it aside.

Step 5: For QSFP28 transceiver equipped with a pull-tab, hold the transceiver so that the identifier label is on the top.

Step 6: For QSFP28 transceiver equipped with a bail-clasp latch, keep the bail-clasp aligned in a vertical position.

Step 7: Align the QSFP28 transceiver in front of the transceiver’s socket opening and carefully slide the QSFP28 transceiver into the socket until the transceiver makes contact with the socket electrical connector (see the figure below).

Step8: Press firmly on the front of the QSFP28 transceiver with your thumb to fully seat the transceiver in the module’s transceiver socket (see the below figure).

Caution: If the latch is not fully engaged, you might accidentally disconnect the QSFP28 transceiver.

Step9: For optical QSFP28 transceiver, reinstall the dust plug into the QSFP28 transceivers optical bore until you are ready to attach the network interface cable. Do not remove the dust plug until you are ready to attach the network interface cable.

How to Connect Optics for Arista 7250QX-64 Switch

Connecting a QSFP+ DAC Cable to Arista 7250QX-64

The proper connectivity procedures and some installation notes are very essential for connection between DAC cable and the switch. The detailed information are just below.

The connectivity steps:

1. If the QSFP+ DAC cable connector is covered with a rubber safety cap, remove the cap. Save the cap.
2. Check the port on the switch and make sure the right connectivity. If you choose 40G QSFP+ to QSFP+ DAC cable for connectivity, please make sure that is a 40G port.
3. Insert the cable connector into the switch port.

4. Secure the cables so that they do not support their own weight. Place excess cable out of the way in a neatly coiled loop. Placing fasteners on a loop helps cables maintain their shape.

Warnings and Cautions

1. Before you begin connecting the QSFP+ DAC cables to the switch, ensure that you have taken the necessary precautions for safe handling of lasers.
2. Do not bend the QSFP+ DAC cables beyond their minimum bend radius. An arc smaller than a few inches in diameter can damage the cables and cause problems that are difficult to diagnose.
3. Do not let the DAC cables hang free from the connector.
4. Do not allow fastened loops of cables to dangle, which stress the cables at the fastening point.

Installing a QSFP+ transceiver in Arista 7250QX-64

Installation steps:

1. Remove the transceiver from its bag.
2. Check to see whether the transceiver is covered with a rubber safety cap. If it is not, cover the transceiver with a rubber safety cap.
Warning: Do not leave a QSFP+ transceiver uncovered except when inserting or removing a cable. The rubber safety cap keeps the port clean and prevents accidental exposure to laser light.
3. If the port in which you want to install the transceiver is covered with a dust cover, remove the dust cover and save it in case you need to cover the port later. If you are hot-swapping a transceiver, wait for at least 10 seconds after removing the transceiver from the port before installing a new transceiver.
4. Using both hands, carefully place the transceiver in the empty port. The connectors must face the switch chassis.
Caution: Before you slide the transceiver into the port, ensure that the transceiver us aligned correctly. Misalignment might cause the pins to bend, making the transceiver unusable.
5. Slide the transceiver in gently until it is fully seated.
6. Remove the rubber safety cap when you are ready to connect the cable to the transceiver.

Rack Mount Vs. Wall Mount Rack

As an indispensable IT equipment, network rack or server rack has been playing a significant role in cable management. For efficiently and safely holding all the networking devices, network racks are quite necessary. Without network racks, the cabling would look cluttered and the health of the networking equipment stored inside would be impaired.

Basically, a network rack consists of two or four vertical mounting rails and the supporting framework required to keep the rails in place. The common width of a network rack is 19 inches-most of the racks are made to accommodate any equipment that can fit in to this space. Rack mount

Rack mount, also called floor standing network racks, which are used to house both network and server equipment. They are primarily used in data centers and other places with a large number of equipment. Their common size are 24U, 30U, 36U, 42U, and 45U. The whole front section generally comes with full length doors with hardened glass/lock. Some might even have rear doors. In addition, the floor standing racks offer specialized channels for electrical cabling, network, etc which ensure neat movement of cables in the rear end, along the height of the racks. Wall Mount Rack

Wall mount rack is a kind of rack which can be attached to the wall. The biggest advantage is that it can save floor space and fit in areas where other racks cannot. They typically come in open frame or cabinet styles. Wall mounted network racks are useful for housing edge devices in individual departments with fewer networking equipment.
